360° Reality Capture for Construction: A Practical Guide

How floor-plan waypoints, dated 360° captures and linked records create a visual site history that teams can review remotely.

· BuildRevu Team

A 360° site record lets a reviewer look around a location instead of relying on whichever direction a conventional photo happened to face. Its value, however, comes from structure: every capture needs a location, date and relationship to the project record.

Start with the floor layout

Upload the relevant floor plan and place named camera waypoints at repeatable positions such as lift lobbies, corridors and principal rooms. Give each point a stable code. The next site walk should capture from the same points so dates can be compared meaningfully.

Set a capture rhythm

Choose a frequency that matches the pace and risk of the work. Weekly capture may suit active fit-out floors; milestone capture may suit concealed services before ceilings close. Record the actual capture date and avoid replacing older images. A useful visual record is a timeline, not a gallery of latest photos.

Link what the viewer can see

A pin inside the panorama should lead to the controlled record for the issue: snag, HSE observation, progress evidence, NCR, SOR, EI or RFI. The linked record remains the source of responsibility, due date and closure status. The panorama supplies location and visual context.

Compare the same point over time

Side-by-side or wipe comparison helps a team confirm installation progress, access changes and whether corrective work is visibly complete. Compare captures from the same waypoint and use approved records, not visual judgement alone, for formal acceptance.

Share safely

Clients and funders often need visibility without access to the whole project workspace. Use a read-only tour that can expire or be revoked. Exclude confidential record details and retain control over the original project files.

A practical capture checklist

  • Confirm the correct floor layout and waypoint code.
  • Stand in the repeatable marked position.
  • Keep the camera level and avoid obstructing the lens.
  • Record the date and responsible person.
  • Add issue pins only when they link to a real project record.
  • Check the panorama before leaving the area.
  • Retain every dated capture for comparison.

BuildRevu places camera points on floor layouts, supports dated 360° photos and video, links hotspots to controlled records, compares visits and creates revocable client tours.
