Construction HSE Software: What to Look For

A buyer’s checklist for construction safety records, permits, hazards, incidents, corrective actions, competence and field access.

· BuildRevu Team

Construction HSE software should help the site team identify risk, control work and close actions—not simply digitise forms. Evaluate a system against the decisions it must support in the field.

Hazard and incident records

The system should distinguish hazards, observations, near misses and incidents while keeping a consistent location, severity, evidence, owner and due date. A hazard needs a visible status until its corrective action is verified.

Permit-to-work control

Permits should identify the activity, zone, time window, risk assessment, precautions, competent people and reviewing HSE manager. Expired permits must not look live. The approval trail should show who authorised the work and when.

Corrective action workflow

Actions need a source record, owner, target date, evidence and independent closure. Overdue actions should surface automatically. Escalation to meeting minutes should preserve the original safety link.

Worker competence

Track qualifications and certificate expiry for people assigned to controlled work. Warnings should appear before expiry so replacement evidence can be reviewed without disrupting the site.

Mobile and offline use

Safety observations happen where signal may be weak. Field users need a clear phone workflow for location, severity, notes and photos, with pending items retained safely until connectivity returns.

Reporting that helps decisions

Useful dashboards show active high-risk hazards, open and overdue actions, live permits, incidents, audit failures and expiring certificates. Summary numbers should open the records behind them.

Questions for vendors

  • Can permissions separate logging, review and management?
  • Does every decision retain the author and time?
  • Can a corrective action link to its source?
  • Are building and zone filters consistent?
  • Can reports be exported for independent review?
  • What happens in the field without signal?

BuildRevu combines HSE hazards, incidents, permits, audits, competence and actions with project locations, notifications and auditable decisions.
